Tanya Lyons has been working on this exhibition for over two years, dreaming, drawing, mentoring, making and trying hard to make more and more with others.
Four and a half years ago Tanya moved back to her home town community in the Ottawa Valley, a diverse community, made up of the Algonquin Nation, early settlers and back to the landers.
Returning to this community has been an interesting transition back to something so familiar yet so distant at the same time, eye opening and enlightening. This exhibition reflects on transitions, exploring the idea of opening yourself up and exposing the truth, revealing and lifting the layers that can cover a community, baring who we are and celebrating what we have to share. The beaded dress in this exhibition is titled “We Bleed”, It celebrates women and the monthly cycles we share.
For this piece Tanya invited women to her studio to make red glass beads and sew them onto a wearable dress together. It was an inspiring time of meeting, sharing, learning and growing together.
