JOB DESCRIPTION

The Editor-in-Chief directs the editorial vision for Studio Magazine and serves as one of its primary public voices. Reporting to the Craft Ontario Executive Director and Publisher, the Editor-in-Chief curates compelling content for a diverse readership, builds and sustains relationships across Canada’s craft and design community, and explores current developments in material culture with depth and rigour. The Editor-in-Chief embraces team cultivation, providing creative leadership to both the external contributors who bring critical and artistic expertise to each issue and the internal production team, including the copy editor and designer, and demonstrates commitment to the highest quality of journalism. The Managing Editor, who leads production coordination and operations, reports to the Editor-in-Chief. The two roles are designed as close partners with shared accountability for production timelines: each depends on the other’s timely delivery, and the integrity of every issue rests on both.

This is a part-time contract position of 520 hours per year (approximately 260 hours per issue), open to candidates anywhere in Canada.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Editorial

  • Plan, coordinate, and direct editorial activities for both print and online publication, reflecting and exploring contemporary Canadian craft and design practice.

  • Develop and communicate the editorial vision for each issue, including thematic direction and calls for pitches.

  • Commission and assign work to writers, artists, and critics; read and evaluate all proposed material; and complete substantive editing to a high professional standard.

  • Write the editorial note for each print issue and, on occasion, contribute original pieces for print or online.

  • Manage the Editorial Advisory Committee, including participation from provincial craft councils, drawing on EAC insight to develop editorial themes, surface writers and artists, and inform content strategies.

2. Production

  • Develop a per-issue work plan in collaboration with the Managing Editor, outlining editorial priorities, key deadlines, and approximate hours by month; treat the agreed schedule as a binding commitment and communicate proactively when any EiC deliverable is at risk of delay.

  • Track all elements of each assigned article, including copy, art, credits, copyright, and captions.

  • Undertake final review and proofing of each issue’s content and design, ensuring that magazine industry standards are met.

  • Ensure that all production and final issue information is filed and saved in a timely manner on Craft Ontario’s cloud storage.

3. Business and Organizational

  • Work with the Managing Editor and Publisher to ensure that production expenses align with budget targets.

  • Support advertising and marketing initiatives that further the financial success of Studio Magazine, and ensure that advertorials are edited to a high standard.

  • Initiate and support special project initiatives, including grant and funding applications, and uphold Craft Ontario’s strategic objectives.

  • Report annually to the Craft Ontario Board on Studio’s successes, challenges, and goals.

4. Community and Advocacy

  • Stay current with developments, achievements, and conversations in the Canadian craft and design community, and represent Studio Magazine through networking and advocacy.

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with craft artists, institutions, galleries, academics, and provincial craft councils across Canada.

  • Represent Studio Magazine publicly in media and within professional networks, and participate in person in arts community events wherever the EiC is based.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent editing and writing skills, with a minimum of three to five years of professional experience in a publication or editorial context.

  • In-depth understanding of craft and design in Canada, a passion for promoting craft and its makers, and demonstrated connections to a network of craft artists, institutions, administrators, and academics.

  • A public presence in the field: the ability and appetite to represent Studio externally, engage with peers and media, and contribute to discourse on Canadian material culture.

  • Outstanding communication, analytical, and organizational skills, with proven ability to effectively coordinate multiple contributors, colleagues, and stakeholders.

  • Strong aptitude for project and process management, with demonstrated success overseeing timely print and digital publication production.

  • Good judgment, the ability to work well under pressure, and meticulous attention to detail.

  • A sense of enterprise and initiative, and the ability to problem-solve in a small organizational context.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, G Suite, and Adobe Creative Suite.

COMPENSATION

  • $24,000 annual contract fee, invoiced monthly

  • 520 hours per year (approximately 260 hours per issue)

  • Contract renewable annually upon agreement of both parties

  • Position can be held from anywhere in Canada
